The Love Song
Art Picture: The Love Song "Alas, I know a love song, / Sad or cheerful, each in turn," were the lyrics that appeared in the entry for this picture in the 1878 show catalogue. Fittingly, Cupid pushes the organ to the right while carrying arrows over his shoulder. Music was praised by writers and artists of the time as an example of art that addressed directly to the emotions. There is no story in this picture, according to one critic; there is nothing to infer, only feelings. Burne-Jones connected the depressing scenario to his turbulent relationship with model and artist Maria Zambaco (1843–1914). Businessman William Graham, who also commissioned the neighboring Small Briar Rose series, was the original owner of the picture. DOWNLOAD PICTURE HERE
